Travel and Accommodations
Flying to the Bay Area
Oakland
If you are flying Southwest, this is the best airport to fly into. They consistently have evening and morning flights that are direct from Chicago and other cities in the Midwest and East Coast.
There are three airports that we would recommend flying into, Oakland, San Francisco (SFO), and Sacramento. These are going to be the most reasonably priced for tickets and have the easiest access to Napa.
San Francisco
This is the best airport to fly into if you want to add visiting the Bay Area to your travel plans. It is in close proximity to Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco, Mill Valley, etc. There are also a ton of different airlines that fly direct into San Francisco, including Breeze which flies from the East Coast.
Sacramento
Sacramento is northeast of Napa. It is farther away from the Bay Area, but is a good place to fly in and out of if you plan to only do Napa, or explore Northern California, including Mendocino, Redwood National Park, or drive up to Tahoe!
Getting Around
Rental Cars are accessible at any of the three airports listed above. We have also had amazing luck using the Turo App for vehicle rentals, and highly recommend using this app. Often times, they will even pick you up at baggage claim if you book with delivery.
Lyft and Uber from airports are typically easy to pick up (these can cost anywhere between $110-$175 from Oakland and SFO. We have never taken a ride share from Sacramento, though we imagine prices are likely comparable, as distances are about the same).
If you are staying in SF, near the Fisherman’s Wharf or Embarcadero, you can also travel via ferry to Vallejo, followed by a ride share or bus to St. Helena. This is a fun way to see San Francisco Bay and the Bay Bridge, while cutting down the costs of a ride share.
Charter buses are plentiful to and from the East Bay and San Francisco to Napa. If you are traveling with a large party and don’t want to rent a vehicle, this is an easy way to get to St. Helena. Be sure to book the bus early, as May in Napa is often quite busy!
Our goal for our wedding weekend is to make it easy enough for guests to get around without renting a vehicle. Lyfts are usually fairly easy to find in Napa and Alila Hotel is walking distance to many restaurants, coffee shops, wine rooms, drug stores, grocery stores, and shops!
